My Remington 700

My Remington 700 started out as a new SPS Varmint model with the 26” heavy barrel. While first shooting this gun, straight out of the box with the included super cheap scope, I averaged around a one and a half inch group at 100 yards. This is certainly fine for a hunting rifle, however, this gun will not be exclusively a hunting rifle. My eventual goal is to compete in F-Class T/R competition and that calls for a super accurate gun. Since purchasing this rifle I have devoted my shooting money to building it into the best rifle I possibly could, and boy have the modifications paid off! So long as I do my part, this gun easily shoots under 1/2 MOA at 100 yards (best group to date was 5 shots in .157” from a bipod in the prone position).

This is what my rifle started out as...

This is what my Remington 700 looks like now.

My Remington 700

As it sits now only the action and barrel are still factory Remington. The Remington 700 is an excellent foundation that can either be shot as is, or built as crazy as you want. As you can see I’ve opted for the crazier side of that spectrum. Here's a list of what I've installed on this rifle.

Stock: Bell and Carlson Tactical Medalist A5, full aluminum bed block.

Trigger: Jewell Trigger for Remington 700, with the safety

Firing Pin: Callahan Speed Lock Firing Pin

Scope Base: Leupold Mark 4 1 Piece (+20MOA)

Scope Rings: Leupold Mark 4 Aluminum, Medium Height

Scope: Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10X40mm Duplex Reticle

Scope Level: Mounting Solutions Plus 30mm Scope Level

Sunshade: Tenebraex Mark 4 Anti-Reflection Device

Barrel Vibration Damper: Sims Bull Barrel De-Resonator

Bipod: Harris 6-9", this one does not swivel or have the leg notches.

I still have bigger and better plans for my Remington 700, mostly swapping out the remaining stock components in favor of fully custom match pieces. I plan on getting a Surgeon Short Action Repeater for my new action. The Remington actions can be blueprinted and improved quite a bit, but nothing will ever shoot as well as a custom action that is built correctly to start with. I will match that action to a Bartlein Barrel that is 22" long and chambered for the .308 Winchester. Bartlein barrels are of phenomonal quality and they have the 5R rifling profile that is so sought after. Once I have made these improvements I think that will be just about as good of a match rifle I can get, and it ought to serve me very well. I plan to take this action and rebarrel it to be my hunting rifle. It will most likely be chambered in .260 Remington.

Once I have these rifles completed I do also plan on getting a smaller, lighter rifle, possibly a Savage. I'm thinking in .243 Winchester. This rifle will mostly be for deer hunting. A .243 Win is really all I need in southeastern United States, our deer are very small down here. I found a collection of very good articles about hunting rifles and all sorts of other guns for hunting at Score-Your-Hunting.com, make sure to check them out.
